What is this?

We have this beautiful, gigantic, purple-blooming tree in our front yard. It hangs over the sidewalk and requires me to duck as I pass by. It has thorns and these beautiful purple flowers. I have no idea what it is. Can someone help me identify it?

It is a bouganvillia. They are very common in Florida and we also saw them in Israel this past spring. They vary in color from fuscia to red, peach and everything in between. I love their tropical lush look - it reminds me of "warm!"

You see bouganvillia sometimes in hanging baskets here in central Texas. It's the same plant, I think, but in the tropical weather it grows much larger.

Ahhh. I have seen bouganvillia that are a bright red, but never this purple color. I didn't realize they came in more than one flavor. Thanks for the responses.

Nicole should have been able to tell you what plant that is, as her parents have one (a little darker in color)in their front yard. Bouganvillia's are very common in the Rio Grande Valley (South Texas)and range in color from white, yellow, pink, red & purple.

for the record...I did tell what it was. I just didn't realize that it was in question until after the blog was up :) haha
